Hong Kong World Milk Day "Hong Kong Family Health Survey 2018" Press Conference (May 31, 2018)

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has designated 1 June as "World Milk Day" to annually promote the importance and health benefits of drinking milk. FrieslandCampina (Hong Kong) Limited commissioned the Hong Kong Baptist University Centre for the Advancement of Social Sciences Research to conduct "Hong Kong Family Health Survey" for Hong Kong World Milk Day 2018. A total of 429 Hong Kong residents of different ages were interviewed. Parents aged between 21 and 60 with at least one child aged between 6 and 12, and elderly persons aged between 50 and 70 were surveyed to study the diet and exercise habits of their children, themselves and elders at home, including their daily dietary and dairy intake, exercise habits and number of hours they used electronic devices for leisure.

Overviewing dairy intakes of Hong Kong people across different ages, over ninety percent of parent respondents (91%) and their children (99.5%) did not meet the recommended dairy intake on daily basis. 42.5% parent respondents and 25% of their children did not consume any milk. The survey also found out that half of parent respondents (46%) believed that their children were picky eaters and more than one-third of the those (36.5%) admitted that they are also picky eater. Besides, parent respondents and their children did not exercise enough. Parent respondents' average time spent on exercise was 64.8 minutes per week, but the time spent on using electronic devices for leisure was nearly 48 hours per week, which was 44 times the amount of time spent on exercise.
